Prepare the proper planting hole
When preparing to plant your tree, there is the need for you to make a planting hole which is twice or three times wider than the current root mass of the plant. However, be sure to mind the depth of the hole as it should never be deeper than in the plant’s previous environment.
When planting, it is recommended that you pay attention to the root ball and have at least 25 percent of the root higher than the surrounding soil level. Once this is done, be sure to taper the soil and the root ball while adding a generous amount of mulch to protect the root. This is recommended because newly disturbed soil tends to settle over time.
Inspect the root and disturb only when necessary
Before planting, be sure to carefully inspect the root to be sure that it is in the right condition. If the roots have started growing in the shape of the container or appear to be bound in a circular pattern, it is recommended that you gently disturb it to break up the pattern. This will encourage proper growth and adaptation of the tree in its new location.
One of the reasons why it is recommended that you dig a wider hole is to ensure that the roots have a wider area to work with. It is also recommended that you add organic matter or certified compost to the soil as part of amendments to make it better.
Take proper care to lightly tamp or hand-pack the soil around the plant root in order to eliminate air pockets.
Place about three inches of organic matter such as ground bark, shredded leaves or wood mulch around the plant to protect the root and plant base.
Water is essential for the healthy growth of your plant and as such, it is recommended that you add a generous amount of water to the plant until it is well established.
